Welcome to Class W

Year Group: Reception

Teachers: Mrs Horton & Mrs Dear

The children in Class W follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework (EYFS). Teachers plan learning experiences and activities that are playful and cross curricular.

Broad themes and engaging projects are planned which enable flexibility for staff to respond to children's interests. Much of the project work in Class W is driven through high quality texts that engage the children and stimulate their learning.

The classroom is resourced with provision areas (eg. construction, water, roleplay) which the children access independently throughout the day. These areas are regularly enhanced in response to current curriculum themes and to children's interests. The children also access outdoor play sessions everyday - whatever the weather!

There are seven areas of learning in EYFS:

  • communication and language
  • physical development
  • personal, social and emotional development
  • literacy
  • mathematics
  • understanding the world
  • expressive arts and design

There are two statutory assessments that take place during a child's Reception Year:

  • Baseline Assessment (within the first 6 week)
  • EYFS profile (at the end of the year)

Play is essential for children’s development, building their confidence as they learn to explore, relate to others, set their own goals and solve problems. Children learn by leading their own play, and by taking part in play which is guided by adults.

As children settle and grow older, there will be a greater focus on teaching the essential skills and knowledge in the specific areas of learning. This will help children to prepare for year 1.
