Warley Town School

Inclusion

We welcome and embrace the opportunity to teach all pupils irrespective of race, gender, disability, belief, sexual orientation, age or socio-economic background.  Diversity and differences are valued, respected and celebrated by all and they will contribute to the richness of our school life and learning. We will strive to ensure that all pupils achieve their potential personally, socially, emotionally and academically in all areas of the curriculum.

We tackle discrimination through the positive promotion of equality, by challenging bullying and stereotypes and by creating an environment which champions respect for all. Our admissions arrangements are fair and transparent and do not discriminate on the grounds of race, gender, religion, belief, disability and/or socio-economic background.

Mrs Hopkins is our Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO).  She has successfully completed The National Award for Special Educational Needs Coordination (NASENCO) Qualification. She can be contacted through the school office:

Widgit

We are developing our use of Widgit symbols to help children understand language and support  them to process the world around them.

Our use of Widgit symbols includes signage around the school, classroom resources,  displays, visual timetables and social stories.

Makaton

We are beginning to use some Makaton signs.

Makaton is a programme that uses visual symbols and hand signs to support communication and aid speech. Makaton stimulates sounds and words and it is to be used alongside words in spoken word order.

The ability to communicate is one of the most important skills we need in life. Supporting our pupils to communicate helps them within their independence, learning, relationships, wants and needs and builds their self – esteem.

Makaton is beneficial to all children as it helps the development of listening and attention, motor skills, social skills, friendships and confidence. Makaton is also enjoyable and extremely inclusive!

Each week we will be introducing a Sign of the Week in our assemblies. So far we have learnt 'good morning', 'thank you' and 'friend'. After half term, we will use the words suggested by the charity:

Zones of Regulation

The Zones of Regulation have been introduced at Warley Town School. Children and staff are encouraged to use Zones of Regulation vocabulary. Posters are displayed in all our classrooms and referred to in whole class, small group and individual discussions.

Assemblies regularly refer to the Zones and story books are used to promote and support the children’s understanding of expected and unexpected behaviours. All classes have developed a Zones of Regulation toolkit.
